Frequently Asked Questions About the AHS Web Site

  1. How do I get access to the Members-Only pages of the site?
The password to the Members-Only pages of the website is published each spring in the Directory of Member Benefits, which is mailed to all AHS members. The password also appears on page 4 in each issue of The American Gardener. If you know your member number, you may send it in an email to webmaster@ahs.org
with the subject “password” to obtain the password.
  1. I have the correct password for the Members-Only pages, but I am asked to sign in again when I try to click on a link and I can never get past the first page of the member-only pages -- what is going on?
If you are unable to move freely within the Members-Only pages with the proper password, your computer is most likely set so that you can not receive "cookies". Because the members-only pages are restricted access, they require the use of "cookies." To change the setting on your computer, go to your preferences or options settings and check the box allowing you to receive "cookies." Different browsers have different specifications. If you have difficulty finding this setting, contact your Internet Service Provider or consult a manual on your specific browser.
  1. Why don't I get anything when I click on the heat-zone map?
Certain pages on the site, including the heat-zone map, are .pdf files that require Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the files. If you do not have this software on your computer, you will need to obtain it in order to view those pages. For your convenience, we have provided a link to the Adobe site where you can download the software for free. Follow the instructions on the Adobe site to download and run the software. (Many sites, besides ours, use .pdf files, so having the Reader on your computer is generally good.)
  1. How do I join AHS and what are the benefits of membership?

  1. When I complete a form on AHS OnLine is it secure?
Yes,  AHS Web Site forms are secure! We use a Security Key to insure encryption of orders. To alleviate your concerns, you can check this out for yourself. When you first go to a form, look on the address line of your browser. This will show you that the URL for the form is https://..., not http://, thus indicating that the form is secure. Browsers will also display a lock on the bottom right corner of the screen to indicate a page is secure.
  1. I need to contact a staff person at AHS. How do I find his or her contact information?
Our Organization Information section of the site includes an online staff directory which provides names, titles and email addresses of staff, as well as AHS's telephone number and mailing address.
  1. Can I visit the AHS headquarters at George Washington's River Farm?
Yes, we would be glad to have you visit! River Farm is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. We are also open to the public on select weekends for special events. River Farm is located in Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C. For directions to River Farm, click here.
